Acid Reflux and Your Teeth

Stomach acid that repeatedly reaches the mouth can contribute to dental erosion, a chemical loss of tooth structure that is different from tooth decay caused by bacteria.

Why reflux matters to enamel

Repeated exposure to gastric acid can soften and wear tooth surfaces. A dentist may notice smoothing, cupping, thinning enamel, sensitivity, or other patterns that suggest erosive wear.

Dental care is only part of the picture

A dentist can evaluate tooth wear and discuss ways to protect affected teeth, but ongoing reflux is also a medical issue. Persistent heartburn, regurgitation, or other reflux symptoms should be discussed with an appropriate medical professional.

Reduce repeated acid exposure

Water can help rinse the mouth after an acidic exposure. Limiting repeated exposure to acidic foods and beverages may also reduce erosive challenges. Your dentist can recommend home-care and restorative strategies based on the condition of your teeth.
