Types of Teeth: Incisors, Canines, Premolars and Molars

Different tooth shapes help cut, tear, and grind food, and each group has a characteristic position in the mouth.

Incisors

The front teeth have relatively thin edges designed for cutting food.

Canines and premolars

Canines have pointed cusps that help tear food, while premolars have broader chewing surfaces and transition between front and back teeth.

Molars

Molars have larger chewing surfaces designed to crush and grind. Wisdom teeth are third molars that may or may not erupt normally.
