Dental Fillings: What They Do

A filling replaces a localized area of tooth structure after decay or damage has been removed.

The goal is to restore form and function

The dentist prepares the affected area and places a restorative material to rebuild the tooth and create a cleanable shape.

Material choices vary

Tooth-colored composite is common, but the best material depends on location, bite forces, size of the restoration, esthetics, and other clinical factors.

Larger damage may need a different restoration

If too much tooth structure is missing or a crack weakens the tooth, a crown or another restoration may be more predictable than a filling.
