How a Dental Crown Is Used for a Damaged Tooth

A crown covers and reinforces the visible portion of a tooth when a filling or bonding would not provide enough support.

Why more coverage may be needed

Large decay, fractures, extensive previous fillings, or root canal treatment can leave a tooth weakened.

The tooth is prepared for the crown

The dentist reshapes the tooth as needed, records its shape and bite, and places a temporary restoration when a laboratory-made crown is used.

The final crown is maintained like a tooth

Brush and clean around the crown daily and have it checked at routine visits. The tooth at the crown margin can still develop decay.
