Dry Mouth: Don’t Ignore It
Dry mouth can be uncomfortable and can also increase the risk of cavities because saliva helps wash the mouth, buffer acids, and support tooth protection.
Common causes
Medications, dehydration, medical conditions, radiation therapy, mouth breathing, and other factors can reduce saliva.
Protect teeth while the cause is evaluated
Sip water, maintain careful fluoride-based home care, and avoid frequent sugary or acidic drinks. Ask a dentist or physician about saliva substitutes or other options that fit your situation.
Persistent dry mouth deserves evaluation
Because dry mouth can have medical and medication-related causes, tell both your dentist and physician if it continues.
