After a Root Canal: General Aftercare

After root canal treatment, follow the instructions given by the treating dentist or endodontist. The tooth may need a final restoration to protect it during normal use.

Short-term tenderness

Some tenderness after treatment can occur. Use medications only as directed by your treating clinician and follow any specific eating or cleaning instructions provided.

Protect the tooth

If a temporary restoration is present, avoid unusually hard or sticky foods on that tooth until the final restoration is completed or your dentist says normal use is appropriate.

Call for unexpected symptoms

Contact the treating office for increasing swelling, severe or worsening pain, fever, a lost temporary restoration, or anything else that concerns you. Urgent medical symptoms require emergency care.

Individual care matters: Treatment recommendations depend on an examination, health history, diagnosis, and individual needs. Call the office to discuss whether evaluation, treatment, or referral is appropriate.
