What to Do About a Chipped or Broken Tooth

A chipped or broken tooth can range from a small enamel defect to a deeper fracture involving the nerve or root. Prompt evaluation helps determine the extent of damage.

Protect the area

Rinse gently with water and avoid chewing hard foods on the affected side. If a piece of tooth has broken off, keep it clean and bring it with you if practical.

Treatment depends on depth

Minor defects may be polished or bonded. Larger fractures can require a filling, veneer, crown, root canal treatment, or extraction depending on the amount and location of damage.

Seek urgent help for severe symptoms

Significant facial trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly increasing swelling, or difficulty breathing or swallowing needs urgent medical attention. For a damaged tooth without those emergency signs, call the dental office promptly.

Individual care matters: Treatment recommendations depend on an examination, health history, diagnosis, and individual needs. Call the office to discuss whether evaluation, treatment, or referral is appropriate.
