Oral Cancer Screening

An oral examination can include a visual and tactile check for changes in the lips, cheeks, tongue, gums, throat, and other oral tissues.

What screening can do

Screening is intended to identify unusual areas that may need additional evaluation. A screening examination does not by itself diagnose cancer.

Changes worth discussing

A sore that does not heal, persistent red or white patches, an unexplained lump, ongoing hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Risk and follow-up

Tobacco and heavy alcohol use are important risk factors, but oral cancer can occur in people without those exposures. When an area looks concerning, further evaluation or referral may be recommended.

Individual care matters: Treatment recommendations depend on an examination, health history, diagnosis, and individual needs. Call the office to discuss whether evaluation, treatment, or referral is appropriate.
