Fluoride and Cavity Prevention

Fluoride helps make tooth structure more resistant to decay and is available through fluoride toothpaste, some mouthrinses and prescription products, community water, and professionally applied products.

Fluoride toothpaste is the daily foundation

For most people, brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste is an important part of cavity prevention. The appropriate amount of toothpaste for young children differs by age and should be supervised by a caregiver.

Professional fluoride is based on risk

Dentists may recommend fluoride varnish or other higher-strength topical fluoride products for patients at elevated risk of tooth decay. The product and frequency are individualized rather than automatically the same for everyone.

Fluoride works with the rest of prevention

Fluoride does not replace plaque removal, cleaning between teeth, a balanced diet that limits frequent sugar exposure, or professional evaluation. It is one tool in a broader preventive-care plan.
